I am a mother, wife, daughter and friend residing in Edmonton, Alberta with my husband and son. My husband and I have been together for nearly 14 years, and we welcomed our son into our lives a little over two years ago. Somewhere along the way, I became a runner and and I'm also trying my hand at cycling, which is proving to be more challenging than expected. I love curling and eagerly watch it with my Grandma during the fall and winter months.
Immediately after high school, I attended the University of Alberta and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Art History in 2014. I went back to the University of Alberta in January 2020 to acquire my Human Resources Management Certificate and recently embarked on graduate studies in January. This is only my second class in the MA-IS program, and I am thrilled to be deeply involved again! Pursuing graduate studies has always been a goal of mine, but I kept postponing it; I realized that if I didn't take the plunge now, I probably never would. Balancing a career, motherhood, and now school has been challenging, but amidst the chaos, I am thankful for the opportunity to learn again and be a student. Returning to school later in life feels different—there is more appreciation on my part, at least from my viewpoint.
Nearly nine years ago, I found myself in human resources, a path I hadn't originally considered after completing my undergraduate degree. A mentor suggested that I would thrive in this role. Fast forward almost nine years, and I'm still with the same company where I began, now holding a leadership position. My mentor continues to guide me, even though she has moved on from human resources but remains with the company. This job has taught me a great deal about the human spirit and how organizations function. It's fascinating to see how leadership styles and top-level decisions can greatly impact the daily lives of employees, the ones who drive progress. It's also been intriguing to witness change management at this level and sometimes the lack thereof and varied perspectives on organizational changes. It's easy to say you'd handle things differently, but it's hard to judge until you're in that position. I've learned that people generally have the best intentions, but things often don't go as planned, which applies to organizations as well. I was drawn to the MA-IS program with a focus on Work, Organization, and Leadership because of my field, and I am eager to discover what I can learn and apply in my career!
